I find this diagram from http://passthebuck.wordpress.com/ apt to explain our situation. Please refer to my earlier blog on 60 minutes
- Afar Land - This is where typically many of the COs (that I wish none of us become) are. They like to have presentations made in the Conference Room with tea and snacks at hand. And as one rises up in career so does the Afar land. This is where many of the officers especially company commanders are too today unless it is a field area.
- Report Mountains - This would be at a higher level, brigade HQ where reports are all that matter. The why behind the reports is not a major concern and if an officer is smart, reports can hide a lot if one manages the formatting style
- Ear-ie Canal - This is what officers unfortunately survive on - the SM is the ear of the CO, the Coy Sub of the Coy Cdr. Sure we need them, but what they tell us is what they think we need to know
- Past Ville - When I was a Coy Cdr, this is what my CO used to do and it worked well. Sure it did then and could work well today too, but are you doing a reality check. Or this is what things have always been till date and so let em continue
- Gemba Jungles - This is where the truth is and unless you step out, you will always be in the dark
