Life Coach - Step 17 of 100 - Single point of failure

SPOF

In our unit we had a JCO Dharam Singh. Great guy - a Delta in every course and able to apply that knowledge in practice. He could speak English too. That made him a perfect candidate for Liaison JCO whenever any general would be visiting around. We once had to recall him from leave to be the LO.

Isin't it a shame that we had around 30 JCOs and could not find anyone to replace him? Sure there may not be many JCOs who speak English, are Deltas and also good at their work. But isin't it a waste putting such a JCO as a LO when he could actually be performing more valuable duties than just sitting in a vehicle that follows the general. And the general would always have his young Captain if he needed anything.

This brings up two issues
  • This person was a SPOF and it is a shame we could not train anyone else in his place
  • This person was under utilised in his duty of LO
How many single points of failure do you have in your unit? Have you identified them? What are your plans for building redundancy? Are you the single point of failure in your unit?
