I was in a discussion with an industry peer now a Vice President in IBM and our topic was what would ensure success every time. We got down to the basic ingredients that guarantee success every time

• Relentless pursuit of perfection
• Through constant innovation both in terms of strategy and operational efficiency
• Based on lean principles

And you do it over and over again. General Colin Powell in his book has given a worthy example of a Lieutnant who approaches a General and asks him how to be a General. The General advises that the only way out is through something very similar that we discussed. The Lieutnant says that will it make him a General and the General says "It will only get you the next promotion and then you will have to start all over again".

Sure hope is a strategy and some people are born lucky to be at the right place at the right time, but the only foolproof way is what we discussed.
