Life Coach - Step 47 of 100 - Quality of life for troops

My brother would always say to me that in US we have a quality of life. I knew it meant that we dont have to struggle for basics - 24 hrs electricity, water supply, quiet neighbour hoods, no potholes, etc. What I did not understand was the next level of quality of life - quality of family time?

I do a 8 hour job and then I am at home with my family. No one can disturb me nor can i disturb anyone except in case of emergency. Weekends are mine. There is no overtime - we get compensatory offs for working on weekends / in evenings. There may be 5% discount to what I say, but generally that is what life is.

As a CO we cannot do anything about the first para for our troops, since we do not control it. But the second para is within our control.

In my unit we started thinking on lines of quality life for troops. This actually translates into professionalism. If I can get all my work done in my office timings, I do not need to work after office hours. And this is only possible if I work without wasting my time or others time.

Is this possible? Yes, you are the COs and if you cannot do it for your troops, no one else can. Example - I as the MTO had to get 150 camo nets made for our vehicles. We had got the skeleton and the chindis separately. Weaving each net with 4 troops took around 4 hours. I told them that the minute they finish - good quality work only - they can leave for their homes. Those guys finished in two hours. I doubled the target for the same goal - go home early. They finished 30 minutes earlier than 4 hours and left for their homes. I used that logic for all the tasks I had to get done. If they are going to work double hard, they need a reward.

How many times have we seen babus sitting in offices wasting time? And same is true for officers - CO saab is in his office - let us sit till he leaves. Is there really this much amount of work? Or are we just creating work.
