Life Coach - Step 2 of 100 - Think, Do and Communicate

All employees in an organization can be grouped into doing 3 kinds of work - Strategic, Tactical and Operational.
The sentry on night duty is operational as is the cook in the langar.
The JCO is operational and a little of tactical.
The Company Commander is operational- tactical - strategic.
The CO is largely strategic.

For any largely strategic role, thinking should account for 60% of your total activity, 10% in doing and 30% in communicating.
For a tactical role thinking is 33%, doing is 33% and communicating is 33%.
For an operational role, thinking is 10%, communicating is 10% and doing is 80%.

Suggestion: As a CO what amount of time are you spending on your thinking - doing - communicating? Can you over a week document what you spent your time over?

In project management we are taught to focus 70% of my time in planning and design. If my planning and hence design is accurate, anyone with reasonable skills can execute the job if I have communicated it to them well.

If you have to delegate do so, you are paid to think, not to do what a Major or Captain can do.
