Life Coach - Step 57 of 100: McDonalds and Defence forces - something common

Deep in my heart, I always knew that in case my unit were to be mobilized at a short notice we were not prepared. I also knew that we would mobilize if need be and achieve our objective, but that was a one time heroism of all people involved.

We dont need heroes or working overtime or working weekends to achieve our objective. Nor do we need luck. Neither of them - hope or luck is a strategy for success. What we need is definite processes and procedures to make things happen.

McDonalds if I have understood them correctly were successfully in building the largest franchise in the world with simple rules - hire a good manager, have very good processes and procedures and hire obedient workers who listen to the manager and follow the processes and procedures.

Isint it strange that our defence forces follow the same rules. We have excellent managers (officers) and obedient employees (troops). What is missing in many cases is the good processes and procedures.

Dont believe me, I suggest you do the following. Have a simulation scenario with a Company Commander. It is a table top exercise only. I will tell you what I want you to do with him once this is over - I want you to chew him apart. Repeat it with every Company Commader.

Table top exercise - Tell the Company Commander that he has received orders to mobilize and ask him to present his plan in every detail. Details you can look for - who goes where, who stays back and who does what, when and where. This will include troops, families, equipment, vehicles, arms, ammunitions, furniture, barracks, everything.

If you want you can give a sufficent notice for the Company Commander to prepare himself for the Table Top exercise. Sit back Tiger and watch your little cubs shock you and once you have chewed them over and over, watch them evolve into Tigers.

In a real situation the Company Commander will mobilize sacrificing family time, working odd hours, etc. But we dont want heroes, we want good managers. Let the enemy die for his country and be a hero. We only want to defeat the enemy, teach them a lesson and win the war. Our obedient troops will rally behind the officer and get things done. We know that, hence maybe we lack processes and procedures. And that is not betting on hope or luck to win our war.
