Life coach - 74 of 100 - QUALITY: immerse, soak and absorb

My daughter Vedika, bless her heart, turned 2 recently and has learnt 2 new words - NO and GO. Brush your teeth honey - NO, eat your breakfast - NO, change your clothes - NO and if we persist, she points in the opposite direction to her and says GO, GO, GO.

If I have to make her brush her teeth without making her cry, the only way is to immerse her in the toothpaste and brush environment - I keep the brush with the paste next to her and let her do what she wants. Till date within 10 minutes she is brushing her teeth. Point to note - she wants to be in control of her situation.

Dont we all want to do so.

I was implementing a balanced scorecard for a $1 billion organization and one of the things that came up was resistance of a majority. We had 1000 participants and most of them did not want to be measured and hence appraised. The way we went about implementing the change is a case study in itself - during the construction of the scorecard, comments were invited from everyone who would be affected. This was very useful because we had not grasped all the scenarios possible that could affect them. Once the scorecard was ready to "Go Live", it was rolled out as an option that one could use if they wanted to. Everyday I was attending feedback sessions with the participants who brought out errors / improvements in the scorecard. These were dealt with overnight. 3 months down the lane, of the 1000 impacted the top 100 pro-scorecard were using it. 6 months down the lane almost all the 1000 had been converted. Change takes a lot of time and it is best for the impacted to immerse themselves, let them soak before they can absorb the change.
